How to Run and Install Android 4.0 ICS on Windows, Mac OS and Linux

Running Android OS on your computer makes it possible to do stuff more than what could be done on the Android device itself. The Android PC installation would help developers to get easy hands on the Android OS and develop apps. You can also use the PC version to try out the interface without purchasing an Android device. Since the Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Android ICS was one of the major change in the interface, and below we share the guide on how the ICS can be installed on your Windows based computer, as a Virtual Layer and not a separate Dual boot OS.

The Android 4.0 ICS can be run on the PC through a free virtualization software called VirtualBox. This tool would create a platform to run an OS on the currently running OS, without having to switch between the two OS at boot up.

Just follow the tutorial below, and you would also need some good internet connectivity to download a few installation files for the ICS to run on the PC.

  • Go to the Oracle VM VirtualBox website to download the VirtualBox binary application for your OS. This can also be installed on the Mac OS X, Solaris PC or Linux.
  • Download the file and install it on your PC, and since we are talking about the Windows PC, the screenshots are for the Windows OS to make it easier to understand. You just have to follow the onscreen instructions to install VirtualBox on your PC.
  • Now, go to the VMLite site and download the Ice Cream Sandwich file which is compatible to run on the Virtual layer, and has all the support for the mouse for navigation through the interface. The file size is close to 89Mb.
  • Now extract the downloaded files, select the file “VMLite-Android-v4.0.4″ from the VirtualBox. Alternatively, you can open it directly and select VirtualBox as the default program to run the file.
  • Go to VirtualBox and select “Add” in the “Machine” menu. This will open the file manager. Now select theVMLite-Android-v4.0.4 file. The VirtualBox will automatically recognize the file as Android Ice Cream Sandwich version 4.0.4.
  • Select VMLite-Android-v4.0.4 from the list on the left side, and then click on the “Start” button on the top to start the virtual OS. For most of them, it will directly start the Android OS on the VirtualBox, but some may need to install a few extension packs for correct functionality, one of which is the USB 2.0 Host Controller. Without this extension pack the virtual OS might not start on your PC.
